The Florida Digital Humanities Consortium (FLDH) organized the 2nd Annual Conference at Flagler College in St. Augustine on April 2nd, 2022. You can find the full conference schedule here.
My presentation was part of a session called “Digital Humanities in the Classroom,” and went under the title “Digital Literacy Through Cultural and Literary Topics in Spanish.” It was focused on my experience with one of my DH courses at UM.

My paper analyzes the nature and implications of practicing Digital Humanities within a Modern Languages context, that of Spanish as Second Language, from a pedagogical standpoint. I explore and exemplify the challenges of introducing digital literacies to a student body population that has traditionally been exposed mainly to language, culture, and literature courses. An audience that frequently has no previous experience with DH and that can potentially feel double challenged by the fact of studying in a foreign language. Then, I showcase several ways, emerged from a course taught in Fall 2021 at the University of Miami, to introduce digital methods in the classroom while exploring the cultural and literary past, digging into present and appraise the extend of digital data. Examples includes experiments in text encoding, mapping, and text mining. Therefore, text encoding offers a situated practice where students recover digital textual archives, perform textual close reading, get in touch with old hand writings, and reflect on the application of data structures and on the idea of text. Text mining of linguistic corpora open a way to explore digital narratives. And mapping offers the opportunity to reflect on the labor of data input, get familiar with certain geographies and the skills to create useful and meaningful visualizations. My approach aims to grasp how the digital can be accessed through a cultural and linguistic perspective and how that foreign culture can offer specific values to understand the digital from multiple and specific linguistic, social, cultural, and literary perspectives.
